Billy Stiles. His birth name was: William Larkin Stiles. Also known as William Larkin and Billy Larkin. Stiles was both a Nevada Lawman and an Arizona Outlaw. Stiles at one time partnered up with an outlaw named Burt Alvord. Both of them were facing robbery charges and were being held in the Tombstone, Arizona jail. They managed to escape from the jail in December 1908.

A Lawman at the time of his death, he was killed while trying to arrest a man named Charles "Charlie" Barr at the "Riley Ranch" which was on the Kings River about 90 miles north of Winnemucca, Nevada. Barr was later indicted for Stiles' murder. In 1914 Barr was tried for the murder of Stiles but was found "not guilty." The jurors believed that because Stiles had threatened Barr on previous occassions, Barr had acted in self defense.

The funeral was held in Winnemucca, Nevada on Thursday afternoon, December 10, 1908. Cochran's Undertaking handled the services. Billy was buried in the Winnemucca Pioneer Cemetery on the north bank of the Humboldt River.
The death certificate was officially recorded on January 7, 1909.

Billy Stiles was a man who cheated death on numerous occasions. It is true, that many Arizonans believed Billy Stiles died the way an outlaw should. He died having a reputation as one of the most notorious outlaws in Arizona history.

The Law Enforcement Memorial in Carson City, Nevada bears a plaque which reads: Deputy Billy Larkin, Humboldt County, Killed 12-08-1908. The National Peace Officer Memorial in Washington D.C. shows recognition to: William L. Stiles.

The only cemetery in Winnemucca at the time of Billy's death was the "Pioneer Cemetery" on the north side of the Humboldt River. Many of the graves were moved to a second newer cemetery on the south side of the river in the fall of 1909 when Hwy 95 was improved and the space was needed. However, many of "these" graves are unidentified. Only a few graves remain in the Old Pioneer Cemetery. Old records are non-existent and others are in disarray. On March 10, 1936 the Old Pioneer Cemetery was closed.
