Elon then, at the age of 32, married 16-year-old Mary Strickland in Sabine Parish, Louisiana June 14, 1846. Mary Strickland's parents are Noah Strickland and Mary Carter.

The 1880 U. S. Census shows Mary widowed and living in Jefferson Township, Arkansas. It also shows her parents from Kentucky, and shows her occupation as farming. It also shows daughter Victoria Spear, 21, working on farm, son Bluford Campbell, 12, working on farm, son James Campbell, 12, at home, daughter Idella, 8, at home, son Charles Campbell, 6, at home, and 1 year old granddaughter Eudora Spear. The 1900 Hopkins County, TX census shows Mary living with son Bluford Campbell and his daughters, and also shows her parents being from Kentucky.
