Nila moved from Cross Anchor, SC, to Lafayette Co., AR by 1870, with his mother and her family. The portion of Lafayette Co. that they lived in became part of Miller Co. The location of the grave of his mother, Martha Cornelia Sexton Kelly/Slay, is not known. She died in Miller County, AR in the 1890s.

Nila married on 10/9/1879 to Mary Jane White. They lived in the Arkansas towns of Brightstar, Era, and Kiblah, but also across the state line in Texas near the towns of Atlanta and Queen City, where Nila delivered the mail. In 1898, they moved near Lipan, Texas, for the remainder of their lives.

After Mary Jane's death, Nila remarried on 12/6/1906 to Lizzie Bernard in Hood County, and spent the last two years of his life with her.
