Edna Mae Powell Burns
RALPH Edna Mae Powell Burns, age 91, of Ralph, died Dec. 2, 2007, at Northport DCH. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Ralph with Rev. Scott Livingston, Rev. Edwin King, and Rev. Tim Falk officiating and Sunset Funeral Home directing. Graveside services will follow at Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Sunset Funeral Home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
Mrs. Burns was preceded in death by her parents, J. S. (Jim) and Prossie Powell; her husband of over fifty years, Aubrey O. Burns; a son, Jimmie A. Burns; an infant son and daughter; her sisters, Thelma Burroughs, Iva Lee Lancaster, Tommie Powell, Ann Marlowe, and Ora Gay; and her brothers, Holmes and Wheat Powell.
Survivors include her son, Randall K. Burns (Ann) of Ralph; her daughter, Janis Burns Wood (Chip) of Northport; her sisters, Nell Nix of Childersburg, Melba Moore of Jena, and Rhoda Kyzer of Northport; her grandsons, Aubrey Kent Burns (Heather) and Christopher L. Wood (fiancée Kaley Robertson); her granddaughters, Amy Posey and Audra Falk (Tim); and her four great grandchildren, Rebecca Posey, Emilee Burns, Naomi Falk, and Rachel Falk; her foster daughters, Lisa Masoud of Connecticut and Donna Sexton of Northport; as well as many other foster children and countless nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Burns was born on May 15, 1916 in Jena, Alabama. She married her husband of over fifty years, Aubrey Otis Burns, in 1933. Mrs. Burns leaves behind a legacy of love and selfless kindness. Over the course of her life, Mrs. Burns was a foster mother to more than 100 foster children in Tuscaloosa County. She was a devoted member of Shiloh Baptist Church for over 70 years, and served in many capacities, including providing custodial care for a number of years. Mrs. Burns was a wonderful wife, mother, Mamaw, Granny, sister, and friend who was dedicated to providing a loving home for her husband and children.
Though Mrs. Burns will be greatly missed by her surviving relatives and friends, we rejoice that she is now reunited in Heaven with those she loved who preceded her in death. We take special comfort in knowing that she was met at Heaven's door by our Lord and Savior, her husband, and three of her children.
Pallbearers will be Ralph Lancaster, Robby Hall, Gerald Burns, Stanley Burns, Don Lancaster, Maurice Costes, Walter Powell, and Jack Brewer.
Honorary pallbearers are members of Shiloh Baptist Church, friends of the Shiloh community, Dr. Stephen Browne and the staff of Northport Internal Medicine, the nursing staff of Northport DCH and DCH Home Health Care, the pastoral staff at St. Mark United Methodist Church and Buhl Church of God, Scott Channell, Tim and Lynn Robertson, and Reuel and Eula Huffman.
