Dr Mary J Wells Childs was among the pioneers in the field of homeopathic medicine. An eyes and ears specialist, she was an Alumni of Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia (now Drexel University), and received post graduate training at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago (now University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine). At the point of marriage, Mary resigned her practice in Princeton, Wisconsin and made her home with her husband in Spokane – or, as it was described in Medical Century, an international journal of Homoeopathic medicine and surgery, she "deserted the practice of medicine, and was married recently to W.O. Childs, of Spokane, Wash." Mary and William married later in life and did not have children.
