Pension file includes two letters 2nd of June 1931 and 11th November 1932, which contain the following information: John Abel in listed in Rogersville, Tenn., 19, July 1814 and served as a private in Lt. Dick Alexanders Company and the 39th Regiment of U.S. Infantry. Was transferred to the 7th U.S. Infantry and while on a march from Fort Decatur to Fort Hawkins, Georgia, was shot thought the left arm which had to be amputated above the elbow the day he received the wound. He was discharged 4th December 1815. At that time in Lt. William Bell's company. John Abel was allowed pension from 5th December 1815, on account of the above noted disability. He was issued pension certificate number 663, dated 28th of October 1820, at the rate of $8.00 per month, by acts of Military establishment, Kentucky agency. In the application of John Abel, it is not stated when or where he was born. The pension files contain no data as to his family. Senate Document No. 30, 17 Congress, 1 session (Washington 1822), entitled "Report of the Secretary of War, Transmitting a statement of the amount of money furnished to the agent at the Bank of Vincennes, in the Sta
te of Indiana, for the purpose of paying pensioners in said state, &c", reveals that John Abel received $504.00 on the 9th of March 1821. The application for the transfer of his pension from the Indiana agency to Kentucky was sworn to 21st December 1821 in Mercer County, KY. The place of h
is residence in either In. or Ky., is not shown. John Abel received 160 acres of bounty land for his service (Reference: #BLWT-24371).

Before me Josiah C. Bunch a Justice of the Peace for said county, personally appeared Robert Martin (late Sargeant in the 39th & afterwards of the 7th regiment U. S. Infantry) and Moses Right (a private of the same regiment), and made oath "that while they were on a march from Ft. Decatur to F
t. Hawkins in Georgia some time in the month of Nov. 1815, John Abel a private of the 39th Regt. US Army received a gunshot wound through the left arm that so fractured it that it was cut off above the elbow by Doctor Laws

I Dick Alexander formerly a Lieutenant during the late Was do solemnly swear that John Abel the person named in the above affidavits was enlisted by me in Rogersville State of Tenn. on the 19th day of July 1814, that I belonged at that time to the 39th U.S. Infantry commanded by Col. John Williams, that said Abel enlisted in said Regiment and marched with me from Knoxville to Fort Montgomery, from thence to Fort Claiborne when ordered by Major General Gains to take command of Fo0rt Claiborne. Said John Abel belonged to my company. From Fort Armstrong of the 24th Re
g. US Army to Fort Decatur opposite Tucalatchee where we joined the 7th Regiment under the command of Col. McDonald with whom I left said Abel. Sworn to and subscribed before me this 5th of Sept. 1820. Jn. Johnson, J.P. D. Alexander
His tombstone read, "John Abel March 2/1791-July 7/1831. A present from Andrew Waldrip." Andrew was a nephew and family historians say that he made.
