He was born Dec. 25, 1921, in Tanner, the son of Theodore P. and Florence Frey Scherer. He and Ruth Struwe were married March 4, 1944, in Sikeston.
He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 3151, where he had served as treasurer for 15 years. He worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include his wife; a son, J. Stephen Scherer; two daughters, Sharon Scherer Lynch and Sydney Gilliland; a sister, Mildred Melton; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter.
Funeral Mass will be said Saturday at St. Francis Church. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.
