Magdalena "Lena" Pelzer was born in Colorado County, Texas on 1 August 1857. She was the daughter of Adam Pelzer and Adam's second wife Catherine Weber Mueller Pelzer Tesch. Her father, Adam Pelzer, arrived in Texas on the ship Herschel in December 1844 from Germany. He came with the German immigration group, the Adelsverein, and was one of the 202 founding fathers of New Braunfels, Texas. Magdalena's mother, Catherine, was one of the early settlers of Fredericksburg, Texas with her first husband, Johannes Mueller, in 1846.

The Pelzer and Schumaker families had long-standing ties. In 1850, the Pelzer family was living in Colorado County, Texas next to the farm of Ahlert Henry and Helena Schumaker, Magdalena's future in-laws. In 1870, Magdalena was living 8 doors down from her future husband, August, in Sublime, Lavaca County, Texas.
On 30 December 1873, Magdalena married August Charles Schumaker, the son of Ahlert Henry and Helena Schumaker, in the Zion Lutheran Church in Sublime, Lavaca County, Texas.

Magdalena and August were the parents of 5 children: Emma Elise Helina (1875 - 1880), Charles August (1877 - 1945), an infant who was born and died in 1877, Dorothea (1879 - 1922), and Wilhelm Johann (1884 - 1886). Only Charles August and Dorothea lived to adulthood.

About 1908, the family moved from Sublime to Taiton in Wharton County, Texas where they were engaged in farming and ranching.

Magdalena died in Taiton, Texas on 10 December 1917 at the age of 60.
