Leonard Schoenfield was born on 16 August 1902 in Sublime, Lavaca County, Texas. He was a twin of his brother Leo. They were the third and fourth of five children of Paul Herman Schoenfield and Dorothea Schumaker Schoenfield.
He and his family were members of the Zion Lutheran Church in Sublime where Leonard and his twin Leo were altar boys.

About 1912, Leonard and his family moved to Taiton in Wharton County, Texas where they continued to be engaged in farming and ranching.

On 25 November 1922, tragedy struck the family when Leonard's mother, Dorothea, died from a stroke. She was only 42 years of age.

Leonard married Elsie May Rieger on 28 June 1924 in Wharton County, Texas. They became the parents of two children: Milton Paul Schoenfield in 1925 and Laverne F. Schoenfield in 1931.
