Colonel, United States Army

Colonel Hanson B. Black was a native of Baltimore and in 1895, graduated from Johns Hopkins University. On July 9, 1898, he joined the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant in the 4th United States Artillery, appointed from West Virginia. On February 2, 1901 he was with the Artillery Corps and on February 28, 1901, he was promoted to First Lieutenant. He was assigned to the Ordnance Department on June 21, 1902. He graduated with honors from the Army School of the Line in 1912. During World War I, he was a Colonel of Infantry in the National Army and in 1920, became a Colonel in the Regular Army. He retired in 1922 for disability in the line of duty. He died on Friday, December 7, 1934 at the age of 60 years at his home, 2604 Thirty-sixth Place. He was survived by his widow, Mrs. Harriet Serrell Deems Black. Funeral services were held at the home followed by interment in Arlington National Cemetery.
