Born August 8, 1839 Rockingham, Windham, Vermont. Married Ellen Davis Nov. 11, 1861. They had Edgar A., Cora Ella, and Osmand J. Locke.

He enlisted on 8/18/1862 as a private; mustered into "I" Company 12th Vermont Infantry on 10/4/1862; and, was mustered out on 7/14/1863.

On his U.S. Passport application he described himself as 5 ft. 8 inches, forehead wide, eyes grey, nose wide & flat, mouth wide with hairlip, chin round, hair chestnut, complexion light, face broad. Passport issued 7 Jul 1870.

His date of death is listed as both January 27 and 28, 1886 in various documents. His cause of death was peritonitis, his residence Montague, occupation stage driver (in some documents, it was "machinist").

Ellen F. Locke qualified for a Civil War Widow's Pension, Box 39205, Certificate 347073:

She was entitled to $20 per month, Commencing Sept. 8, 1916. Under act of Sept. 8, 1916, Wife During Civil War service, Commencing Oct. 4, 1916. Her attorney was George A. Smith of Woonsocket, R.I.

She originally applied under the Act of June 27, 1890, providing evidence of his service dates, his death date, and their marriage date. Rush had not applied for a pension earlier. The filing was executed on May 25, 1891 and she was awarded pension No. 486071. Woonsocket neighbors of Ellen, Imogene Slade and Anna Z. Currier, swore that Ellen had not remarried after the death of her husband. Imogene Slade and Elmer H. Chandler testified that she had no property "...because we have been intimately associated with the aforesaid Ellen F. Locke, she having been employed for two years as a nurse domestic in the Woonsocket Hospital all of that time and afterward (?) we have been employed as matron and superintendent respectively."

On January 15, 1891, Ellen was awarded an "additional sum of $2 per month for the following child, until arriving at the age of 16 years..," Osmond J., June 24, 1900. Osmond was dropped Jan. 11, 1917.

I was born in Roxbury, Vt. on Sept. 24, 1843. My present address is Box 71, Forestdale, R.I. instead of Woonsocket, R.I. from which I moved recently (Handwritten letter from Ellen F. Locke).

Lawrence of Springfield, in the County of Windsor and State of Vermont, aged 50 years, on oath depose and say that I am Town Clerk of the Town of Springfield, and as such clerk have the care and custody of the Records of said town, that I have carefully examined the records of marriages of said town and among them I find the following, viz: -

In the Declaration For Widow's pension, she noted that Rush enlisted at Brattleboro, Vermont as a private. Her statement was, "That Rush S. Locke her late husband was never away from home for any length of time and I have every reason to believe and do believe that he Rush S. Locke did not serve in the military or naval service subsequent to the 14th day of July 1863." There is nothing else of genealogical note in the pension file.

He applied for a U.S. Passport August 27, 1870 to go to Cuba. He was 5 feet, 5 and 1/2 inches tall, grey eyes, and chestnut colored hair.
