Martha was the daughter of James Russell and Nancy McCormick Alexander. The family moved from Carter County to Quincy, Lewis County Kentucky. Her first husband, B.F. Wheeler, died in 1921 leaving her a widow. They were the parents of Mary, Gladys, James, William, John, Lyda, and Nellie.

She was survived by her daughters, Gladys Conroy and Mary Lybrook and her sons James and William. Also surviving her were her sisters Lyda and Mary and her brothers Gordon, Frank, and Perry.

After the death of her second husband, William Fuller, Martha lived with her daughter, Gladys Wheeler Conroy.
