REPORT SYCAMORE BOY IS MISSING
Local Parents Have Word From Navy Department That Their Son, Lee Bauer, Is Now Missing Since His Ship Sank
The parents of Lee Bauer, 22 year-old Sycamore son, who had been serving on the U.S.S. Peary as a fireman first class, received word from the Navy Deaprtment on Saturday that he was missing "following action in the performance of his duty in the service of his country."
Lee had enlisted in the Navy three years ago and was in the Phillipines when war was declared. Since that time he had been with the Peary in all its activities in the Pacific.
Is Sunk At Darwin
When the Peary, a World war four-stacker destoyer of 1,190 tons, was blasted to the bottom of Darwin, north Australian base, by enemy dive bombers on about February 16, concern for his safety was felt. Some of the crew members had been reported saved by swimming to shore -- others went down with the ship.
The Navy Department stated that it would furnish further information promptly concerning the Sycamore boy when it was received. Lee had cabled his parents here only several days before the destroyer is reported to have sunk.
