Died in his home. Son of Oscar and Lois Wagner Hanson. He grew up and went to school in Bend. He graduated from Willamette University, received a master's degree in English literature from the University of Oregon and pursued a doctorate at the U of O and the University of Utah. During WWII, Mr. Hanson was a medic in the Navy. He and Colleen Emery were married Aug. 21, 1953, in Bend. Mr. Hanson taught high school in Seaside for several years. He moved to Monmouth in 1961 and became a college English professor, retiring in 1992. He moved to McMinnville the following year. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A member of Pentacle Theater in Salem, he played the lead in many dramatic and musical theater productions. Mr. Hanson was a published lyricist, poet and playwright. He also was an accomplished pianist, vocalist and performer. Survivors include four sons, Eric Hanson of McMinnville, Gordon Hanson of Portland and Philip Hanson and Daniel Hanson, both of Monmouth; four daughters, Eve Olsen of Salem, Sarah Myer of Baker City, Mara Hanson of Roseville, MI, and Lisa Kohler of Albuquerque, NM; two sisters, Margaret Moore of Bend and Judy Patterson of Wilsonville; and 28 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1990 and by a daughter, Katie Hanson, in 1966.
