From the Bolivar Free Press, Thursday, May 1, 1884: "John L. Carter, son of Joseph Carter, died at his father's residence in Bolivar last Saturday at 2:20. Mr. Carter had recently returned from Wright County and was shortly afterward taken sick with typhoid fever of which he died. The deceased was thirty-one years, and six months. His burial took place at Barren Creek church."
