Army Staff Sgt Pucino was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group of the Maryland Army National Guard, Glen Arm, Maryland. He died of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit while on mounted patrol with an improvised explosive device. Matthew was a graduate of Bishop Stang High School in Dartmouth where he played football. In 2002, he enlisted in the Army as a Special Forces candidate and went on to earn the "Green Beret" as a Special Forces engineer sergeant. Matthew was first deployed to Iraq where he served as a Special Forces intelligence sergeant and again to Afghanistan in July 2009 as a member of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, non-commissioned officer professional development ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, and the Special Forces Tab. This tough Special Forces soldier never lived down being busted by a security guard at Disney World. It seems Matthew was initially asked to leave a pocket knife in his car by security but then tried to sneak it in through a different entrance. This time, a security guard with a gold Mickey Mouse badge caught him – a Green Beret busted by a Mickey cop. Matthew was a loving, caring, humorous and fun-loving man who was also one of the most selfless persons you could ever hope to meet. A fellow soldier recalls when he was shot during a raid; Matthew held his hand and told jokes as they rode back to the base hospital. He also donated two pints of blood for his friend before boarding a helicopter that took him right back to the war zone. He leaves behind his wife, Crystal.
