Julia Prather Clay was born on May 16, 1814 to Thomas Prather (1770-1823) and Matilda Martha Fontaine Prather (1782-1850). On October 10, 1832 Julia married Henry Clay, Jr. (1811-1847). With this marriage she became a daughter-in-law of the famous Kentucky senator and Secretary of State Henry Clay, Sr. (1777-1852). Julia died on February 13, 1840 from complications related to childbirth. She had given birth to her son Thomas Julian Clay (1840-1863) two weeks earlier on January 30, 1840. She was initially interred in one of Louisville's other cemeteries, but when Cave Hill Cemetery opened in 1848 she and her father's remains were moved to the new cemetery. During the Civil War two of her sons died while serving on opposite sides of that conflict. They are buried next to her. Her husband, who died in battle during the Mexican War, is buried in the Frankfort Cemetery in Frankfort, Kentucky.
