Rufus Allen, one of the original Utah pioneers of 1847, was born March 22,1814, in Litchfield county, Connecticut, the son of Gideon and Rachel Allen. He became a convert to "Mormonism" at an early day and suffered considerable persecution through mob violence. When strong and valiant men were chosen for pioneers to the Rocky Mountains in 1847, he was selected as one of them and thus he jouneyed to Great Salt Lake Valley under President Brigham Young. He returned to Winter Quarters the same fall and after his arrival in the Valley the second time he became a resident of Ogden, Weber county, where he died during the winter of 1888-1889.

Rufus Allen, came to Utah with the Brigham Young Pioneer Company 1847 at the age of 33.
Departure: 14 April 1847
Arrival in Salt Lake Valley: 21-24 July 1847 .

The original pioneer company consisted of 142 men, 3 women, and 2 children, and 72 wagons when they left the outfitting post of Winter Quarters, Nebraska. They covered the 1031 miles of the trail in 111 days.
