4/13/1921 (Wednesday) COUNTY COMMISSIONER-ELECT IS DEAD AFTER FOUR WEEKS' ILLNESS
Former Legislator Took Up Practice of Law When 55 Years Old.
Samuel S. Butterfield, 61 years old, county commissioner-elect, died at his home, 2316 S. Broadway, at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Death followed an operation and an illness of about four weeks.
A successor will be appointed by the governor. Mr. Butterfield was elected county commissioner in the November election by a majority of more than 5,000, proportionately the largest of any candidate. HE was to take office July 1, succeeding J.N. Abernathy, present chairman of the board of county commissioners.
Mr. Butterfield was born in Yorkshire, England, and came to the United States in 1885. His first work was with a florist trade journal with which he remained as an associate editor for twelve years. He came to Oklahoma City in 1909 and entered the floral business. Several years ago he conducted a column in The Daily Oklahoman under the heading of the "Flower Garden."
At an age when most lawyers have established their practice, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in June, 1915, when 55 years old. HE had offices the last several years with George D. Key and King L. Fitzpatrick, 716 Oil Exchange building. He was elected a representative from his district to the sixth and seventh legislature, and during the two terms instituted many measures and championed many causes he believed were for civic betterment.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced, pending word from a brother, Rothwell Butterfield, in Jamestown, N.Y. Mr. Butterfield was a member of the Episcopal church and arrangements are being made to have the funeral held from St. Paul's cathedral. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ellen H. Butterfield; a daughter, Mrs. Otto Rose, and a son, Ed S. Butterfield, all of Oklahoma City.
4/15/1921 OBITUARIES (Friday)
