His parents were Joseph Merriam (1782-1866) and Clara (or Clarissa) Hudson Merriam (1787-1869), and he was born in what is now known as Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. In 1839, his family moved to the United States.
He married Phebe Ann Keyes of Conneaut, Ashtabula county, Ohio, on May 2, 1855, at Conneaut.
His sister Caroline Eliza Merriam Beach also lived in Conneaut with her husband Sayre Beach and their many children.
He received a medical degree from Western Reserve University. He was listed as a resident of Conneaut, Ohio in the 1905 Physicians' and Dentists' Directory of the State of Ohio. He is also listed as having received his M.D. in 1851 from Hobart College in Geneva, New York.
He served in the Union Army in the Spring of 1862, as Acting Assistant Surgeon.
The Ashtabula county, Ohio death record shows that he was a resident of Conneaut, but died in nearby Erie, Pennsylvania.
He died at at age 79 years, 1 month, and 9 days. Cause of death: pneumonia.
