Frank M. Schantz was born April 15, 1923, in Flasher, to Gabe (Hammel) and Rose (Scheeler) Schantz. He left us to be with his departed loved ones Aug. 14, 2007.

Frank was the oldest of nine siblings, five brothers and three sisters. His childhood was spent working the farm, at school and later in his teens joined the CCC, to help support his family. He came to Washington in 1940 to find his brother, who left home without permission. He found his brother and got a job at Todd's shipyard, before getting drafted into the Navy. He served with distinction in the South Pacific with his unit, Under Water Demolition Team 3. He saw action in Guam, the Mariana Islands and later, the occupation of Japan. Frank was very proud of his travels and his team's accomplishments in World War II. He spent many enjoyable hours telling friends and family stories from his adventures.

Between deployments, he married the love of his life, Rose Schantz (Smith). They were married 53 years. Together they had seven kids. Frank spent the rest of his years raising his family, working in the concrete industry running plants and driving his mixer truck. He was an active member of The Teamsters Local 174 and the UDT/SEAL association.

Frank was a very active student of geology and loved his life-long hobby of rock hounding and finding artifacts. He loved to make belt buckles and jewelry for all his friends and family. He was a current member of Ellensburg Rock Wolves Club and a former member of Federal Way Gem and Mineral Club, Federal Way, Wash. He made his homes in Seattle, Belfair, Kent and currently resided in Ellensburg, Wash.

Frank is survived by his children, Gayle Taylor, Oak Harbor, William Schantz (June), Burien, Wash., Charles Schantz (Linda) Ellensburg, and Mary Fitzgerald (Les), Alger, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include, Larry Schantz, Overland Park, Kan., Oliver Schantz (Mary), Seattle, Robert Schantz, Seattle, Polly Bartell, Ronan, Mont., Elizabeth Pearce (David), Bremerton, Wash., and Alvina Ballinger (Bill), Bremerton.

A celebration of Frank's life will be scheduled for a later date in September. Memorials can be made to Naval Special Warfare Foundation, at www.nswfoundation.org or P.O. Box 5965, Virginia Beach, Va., 23471; or St. Jude's, who has been so helpful to our family. The Naval Special Warfare Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports children of fallen or injured Naval Special Operations Personnel.
