Entered into rest on Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at University Hospital, Lieutenant Colonel Bernard U. "Bernie" Porter, husband of the late Pauline Chase Porter for 64 years.
Bernie Porter was born March 29, 1919 in Ticonderoga, NY. He was a resident of Bennington, VT, when he was inducted into the United States Army in 1941. He served two years in England and Africa with AFHQ. He was later assigned to the 28th Division, made the landing into France and was a participant in the August 1944 Victory Parade through Paris as a front line officer. He was captured by the German Army during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. Then Lieutenant Porter was held in three prison camps, escaping first from Hammelburg, recaptured and placed on a forced march to Dachau Prison Camp. Two more escapes led him to American Forces and a return stateside in April, 1945. He later became a Paratrooper at Fort Benning, and served eighteen months in combat with the 24th Infantry Division during the Korean War, retiring in 1965. LTC Porter's twenty-six years of service included several command and staff assignments. He was the recipient of three Bronze Stars, three Purple Hearts, and two Army Commendation Medals. Following retirement, Bernie founded and operated the Augusta Club Shop for twenty-four years, and was inducted into the Professional Clubmakers Society Hall of Fame in March, 2002. He was Commander of the Greater Augusta and State Chapters of the American Ex-POW's.
LTC Porter is survived by his daughter, Pat Gold of Canton, GA son-in-law Dr. Nugget Gold; son, Jerry Porter of Deland, FL, daughter-in-law, Peggy Porter; grandchildren, Megan Gold, Michael Gold, Shanna Johnson and husband, Eric Johnson, Kendi Gilmore and husband, Chris Gilmore, Beth Porter Nelson and husband, Major Jay Nelson, Rev. Melody Porter; three nieces and three great-grandchildren. Bernie was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mrs. Pauline Chase Porter.
A Memorial service will be held Thursday, June 8, 2006 at 3:00 P.M. at St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church on Wheeler Rd. with Rev. Harriette Simmons officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the Greater Augusta Chapter of American Ex-POW's. Interment will follow at a later date at the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA. Full Military Honors will be rendered.
