Sarah Mattox was the daughter of Michael McKenzie Mattox and Elizabeth Hartridge Joyce Williams Mattox. Sarah was born in South Carolina, and married William Eason, son of George Eason, in Barnwell District South Carolina on 30 Jan 1794, as per a sworn statement by Sarah.

Both the Mattox family and Eason family moved to Georgia approx. 1800-1808. William and Sarah were instrumental in the establishment of several churches in Tattnall County, the first of which was Mt. Carmel, located between Reidsville and Collins.

Rev William Eason and Sarah Mattox Eason are NOT buried at Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery as many believe. The obelisk at Mt. Carmel was placed there by later generations (primarily by Esmerelda Wells) to commemorate the organization of the church and efforts of William and Sarah Mattox Eason at Mt. Carmel and in bringing Methodism to Tattnall County, Ga. in the early 1800's.

William and Sarah were buried at their homeplace which is said to have been located up to a mile from Mt. Carmel toward Reidsville. No one seems to know where the homeplace is located now. Their graves could be in some woods, pasture land, or may be in a field, so the graves are not marked and identified today.
