Son of Aloysius "Alois" Straub and Catharine Madeline Black. Immigrated from Alsace-Lorraine,France in 1842.

Married Caroline Ciegle Seaton Sept. 4, 1870. Ten children were born to this union- David Alexander, Mary Magdalene, Joseph Edward, William Victor, Catherine Ellen, Emma Della, Caroline May, Harry Frederick, George Robert, and Edna Agnes.
