LEESBURG RESIDENT DIES AT AN ADVANCED AGE
Mrs Charles Glenville Giddings Passed Away On Saturday Last. Funeral Services Tuesday
Mrs. Dorcas Giddings, widow of the late Lieut. Charles Glenville Giddings died at her home in Leesburg, Saturday, Octover 22. She was ninety-two years of age.
Mrs. Giddings was the daughter of Cephas Hempstone and Mary Elinor Belt and was born November 14, 1835. She attended the Ellicott City Seminary, Md. and in 1856 was married at the home of her parents, "Arcadia," to Mr. Charles Glenville Giddings of "Covington". Lieutenant Giddings served as an officer in the Loudoun Cavalry in the war between the States.
Mrs. Giddings through the Belt family descends from Aeneas Campbell, who was Lieutenant with Capt. Nicholas Minor in the Prince William Rangers during the French and Indian war in 1755. In 1757 he was appointed the first sheriff of Loudoun County. Later he served as a justice of the peace. After selling his farm, "Raspberry Plain," located four miles north of Leesburg, he removed to Montgomery County, Maryland. When the Revoluntionary War began, he was appointed an officer in one of the Maryland regiments.
Mrs. Giddings was a devoted Christian and for years was a worker in Christ Church, Lucketts where she retained her church membership and in which community she spent the greater part of her life.
There are many friends who will miss her.
She is survived by three sons, Dr. C. Glenville Giddings of Atlanta, Ga., William Giddings of Maryland, and Eugene Giddings of Manassas; three daughters, Mrs. Ralph Graves and Miss Flossie Giddings of Leesburg, and Mrs. Clinton Adams of Washington, D.C., eleven grand-children and three great grand-children.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from St. James Episcopal Church, Leesburg by her rector, Rev. T.D. Harari, assisted by Rev. G. P. Craighill and Rev. James Blanke of Washington, D.C. Interment at Union Cemetery.
