"Uncle Don" Brittenburg Called by Death
In the death of D.A. Brittenburg, who passed away at the family residence in this city Tuesday, Nov. 20, 1923, at 4:30 a.m., this community lost one of its oldest and most picturesque citizens. For several years his health had gradually failed him, and the past two or three years he had several spells which almost taxed his strength to survive, but his wonderful constitution pulled him through each time until his recent illness.
The Presbyterian church was filled with relatives and friends yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock to pay a last tribute to his memory. An appropriate funeral oration was delivered by the pastor, Dr. H. O. Moore, after which the Masonic fraternity took charge and held ritualistic services at the grave in Green Hill cemetery.
Mr. Brittenburg was born in Nebraska, Aug. 8, 1846, being 77 years old last August. Three years later his father died, and his mother moved to Arkansas, then to Ohio and then to Indian Territory where he spent the remainder of his life. He came to Fort Arbuckle in 1861, and lived there until he moved to Davis in 1918. He worked for the government as blacksmith while the soldiers were at the fort. Farming and blacksmithing were his life's work. He was twice married – first to Maria McLish, to which union six children were born, only two of them now living – J. N. Brittenburg of Hoover and Mrs. Susie Gibbs of Oklahoma City. His second marriage was 18 years ago to Mrs. Lou Miner, who survives him. He also is survived by two half sisters, Mrs. Peter Harmon of Hoover and Mrs. Ann Dent of this city, and one half brother in Colorado.
"Uncle Don" was the soul of honor, and everybody called him their friend. He had a big heart, noble disposition, and was one of the best known men in this section, having lived here 62 years, and watched and helped this country grow from a wilderness to a prosperous, wide awake community. He had his part in its prosperity and progress. He will long be held in kindly remembrance by the large circle of friends made during his eventful life in this community.
