The funeral for Charlie F. Camp of Sandy Springs, a retired general with the Georgia National Guard, will be at 2 p.m. today at Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel Funeral Home, with burial in Floral Hills Cemetery in Decatur.
Mr. Camp, 82, died Sunday at home from complications due to cancer.
Enlisting as a private in 1930, Gen. Camp rose through the ranks and served in the Governor's Horse Guard during Ellis Arnold's administration.
"When 'Gone With The Wind' premiered in Atlanta, my father rode with the rest of the Governor's Horse Guard," said Gen. Camp's son, Leonard C. Camp of Norcross.
Gen. Camp's wife, the late Wilma Brown Camp, also took part in the Atlanta galas. "My mother modeled one of Scarlett's dresses at the premiere ceremony," her son said.
After serving in World War II, General Camp returned to Georgia to continue his military career.
In June 1953, he was awarded the Georgia Distinctive Service Medal for outstanding service to the Georgia National Guard. In 1971, he was awarded the Army Meritorious Service Medal, the first of its kind presented to a Georgia Guardsman.
