Robert G Callum Dies
Inventor and Expert in Telegraphy Passes Away in Hospital.
Robert G. Callum, inventor and expert in telegraphy, died Monday at Maryland University Hospital, Baltimore, following a second surgical operation. Funeral services were held this morning at 11 o’clock at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Culp, 7635 Q Street Northwest. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Callum, who was sixty-three years old, was for many years manager of the Mutual District Messenger Company. He was connected with the Western Union Telegraph Company for forty-seven years. He started as a messenger in Danville, Virginia, his birthplace and at the age of thirteen was manager of the company’s office there.

Shortly after his arrival in Washington, in 1882, Mr. Callum invented the burglar alarm clock, which is now used by the Mutual District Messenger Company. Surviving him are a son, Preston D. Callum of Baltimore and two brothers, William and Kirk Callum of Greensboro, North Carolina.
