Stockbroker Arthur Drago dies at 78 World War II veteran was driving force to an expanded city youth sports program that helped groom Hank Aaron, Willie McCovey Staff Report Arthur C. Drago Sr., a retired stockbroker who was well-known in Mobile as a promoter of youth sports for many years, died Saturday night at a local health care facility. He was 78.
Born in Mobile in 1921, Drago was a member of the last class that included males at the Convent of Mercy. He graduated from McGill Institute before serving in the U.S. Air Force as a bombardier during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and the Air Medal.
Drago returned to Mobile following the war and attended Spring Hill College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English.
He went to work for the city, helping the City Recreation Department grow from a tiny operation to one that served the city's youth of all races, including baseball Hall of Famers Hank Aaron and Willie McCovey.
Drago worked nights as a sportswriter for The Mobile Press Register. He also played semi-pro basketball in the Mobile area until an automobile accident ended his active participation in athletics.
Drago became a stockbroker in the 1960s and continued in that career for more than 30 years. His daily stock market reports on the radio station WLPR were a staple of many Mobilians' weekday routine. He taught evening courses on investments at the University of South Alabama and Spring Hill.
For many years, Drago was Spring Hill's sports information director and was named to the college's Athletic Hall of Fame as an honorary member.
Drago wrote countless articles through the years to encourage and recognize youngsters participating in sports, particularly baseball. He was president of Mobile Youth Baseball in 1971 and three years later was elected to the Mobile County Youth Baseball Hall of Fame.
He funded a pair of scholarships at McGill-Toolen for deserving young women to honor the memory of his first wife, Carole Jones Drago.
Drago was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Eloise L. Drago of Mobile; a daughter, Linda Mangold of Mobile; two sons, Arthur C. "Chip" Drago Jr. and Keith G. Drago, both of Mobile; seven grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Memorials may be made to Mercy Medical or Catholic Charities.
