Wesley Garland Arnold, 86, of Gastonia, N.C., formerly of Danville, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at MeadowWood Nursing Center, Gastonia, N.C. Born March 3, 1923, in Java, he was the son of the late Nile Newton Arnold and Esther Dickens Arnold. He was married to Aileen Harwell Arnold, who passed away June 9, 2008. After growing up in the Schoolfield area, Mr. Arnold lived most of his life in Danville. He and his wife moved to Gastonia in 1997 to be near their daughter. He was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church and had worked for Dan River Mills. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Larry Alexander of Gastonia, N.C.; two sisters, Jackie Suit and husband, Russell, and Betty Jones and husband, Harold, both of Danville; Brother-in-law, Swen Anderson of Florence, Mont.; and sisters-in-law, Estelle Lewis of White Bluff, Tenn., Yolanda Ryan of Hazen, N.D., and Fern Blackburn of Steptoe, Wash. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Helen Anderson and Shirley Elliott and her husband, John. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. David Turbyfill officiating.
