PROF. JOHN A. BOYD DIES FOLLOWING LONG ILLNESS

Veteran Educator of Fort Mill Passes After Being Invalid for Two Years.

Fort Mill, S. C., July 9.--After a lingering illness which has confined him to his home for more than a year past, Prof. John A. Boyd died at 2 o'clock this morning. The funeral services will be conducted at the home at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning by the Rev W. A. Hafner, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Gaffney, S. C., who will be assisted by the Rev. J. W. H. Dyches, Th.D., of the local baptist church, after which the body will be interred in New Unity cemetery.

Professor Boyd was born in Chester county November 29, 1849 and hence was in his 69th year of age. He graduated from Davidson college in 1873 and bean at once his life work of teaching in the schools of this state and in North Carolina, his first school being in Steel Creek, Mecklenburg county, N. C. Later he was associated with Prof Alex R. banks in the conduct of the fort Mill high school which attained so high a standing that students came here from several adjoining states to secure its advantages. Altogether Professor Boyd was connected with the schools of Fort Mill for more than 15 years.

On June 10, 1880, he was married to Miss Mary e. Parks of Providence, N. C., where he was then located in charge of the school, and she together with the following children survive him: Miss Florence Boyd, of Montevallo, Ala., Mrs. J. J. Stewart of Mount Holly, N. C., Sergeant Parks O. Boyd of Fort Caswell, N. C., and Mrs. S. L. Meacham, Mrs. John E. Jones, Miss Julia Boyd and John A. Boyd, Jr., of Fort Mill. He is survived also by three brothers, A. W. Boyd of Star City, Ark., and H. T. Boyd and W. B. Boyd of Cornwell, S. C.

Professor Boyd was a loyal and consistent member of the Fort Mill Presbyterian church which he served faithfully as a ruling elder for more than 33 years. He was a man of strong convictions, earnest and aggressive, and was peculiarly well fitted for his life work. He was held in the highest esteem and respect of the great number of his friends who will learn of his death with sorrow.
