Bannan purchased the failing Miners' Journal and through his ownership over the next 37 years transformed the paper into one of the principal political journals in the state. The paper carried his conservative views. He was a Whig, the party which crusaded for social and moral reform such as keeping the Sabbath solemn and temperance. In 1857 Benjamin Bannan as editor of the paper brought the name "Molly Maguires" to the attention of the American public when he used it repeatedly in articles with headings such as 'A Molly on the Rampage' and 'Molly Beating.' He was always a firm supporter of protection to American industry and proposed and organized the first tariff league; he was one of the first to call for the erection of the Henry Clay Monument.
