The son of Dr. James & Helen Mentoria (Hammett) Brotherton, he was an 1854 graduate of West Point. He was based in Florida subsequent to graduation but apparently had discharged the service before the Civil War because in 1860, he was a "gentleman" living with his family in Waynesboro, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

With the coming of war, he re-enlisted and assigned as captain of Co. H, 5th U.S. Infantry and spent his entire service time in the western theater. and from April 1865 through the following September, was stationed in Franklin, Texas. He remained in the army and retired from active duty to date April 14, 1884. He returned to Franklin County to live out his days and died at his sister's home. He had married Mary E. Towson and fathered Helen (b. 12/01/81).
