Michael Scanlan Dies at 82; Father of Three Priests
Patrick Scanlan, Editor of Brooklyn Tablet Is Also Son -- Ill Long Time
Michael A. Scanlan, 82, of 766 Ocean Ave., father of Patrick F. Scanlan, managing editor of the Brooklyn Tablet and also father of three priests, died last night at the Caledonian Hospital after a long illness. (June 15, 1934)
Mr. Scanlan was born Aug. 1, 1852 at Ballyduhigg, County Limerick, Ireland. In 1916 he took up residence in Brooklyn. Four years ago he retired.
Mr. Scanlan's wife died 35 years ago. He is survived by six children, Mons., Arthur J. Scanlan, D.D., president of St. Joseph's Seminary, Yonkers; the Rev. Martin A. Scanaln, pastor of St. Mary's Church, Katonah; the Rev. Joseph Scanlan, assistant pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Church, Bronx; Lawrence and Michael Scanlan Jr.; Miss Frances Scanlan and Patrick F. Scanlan. He is also survived by a brother, Lawrence and his sisters Mrs. Bridget Russell, the Rev. Mother Ita, Stockport, England; the Rev. Mother Eugenius, London; the Rev. Mother St. John, Kimberley, South Africa, and Sister Felicia, Paris. Six grandchildren also survive the deceased.
The funeral will be held Monday from Mr. Scanlan's late residence, 766 Ocean Ave. The solemn requiem mass will be celebrated in Holy Innocents' Church, Beverley Road and E. 17th St., at 10 o'clock. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
