I REMEMBER MAMA

Tully Joyce Hearn went by the name, Joyce. (She was probably named for Tully Boyce, President of the Miners and Mine Workers Protective Association, Canada. He lived in Nanaimo, British Columbia in 1891 which was where some of Joyce's relatives were killed in a big mining accident.)

Born on Vancouver Island in Canada on June 30, 1914, Joyce and her older sister Pat were raised in Michigan. Sadly they lost their mother to the Spanish Flu (maybe from the vaccine even) when Joyce was 3 or 4 years old and they moved to California, being raised by her maternal grandparents as their father traveled for his work.

Joyce was extremely bright and skipped 3rd grade. She graduated from Los Angeles High School in the Winter of 1931 with honors but due to the depression, she was forced to work and unable to continue her education. (Note: In her high school yearbook, it says she wanted to be an actress which was a surprise to me since she never mentioned it. She an her cousin, actress Joan Leslie, were great friends and her husband worked at the studios.) Joyce worked as a Secretary for Fairchild Aerial Photography.

It wasn't long before she met Gordon Max Palmer (1898-1976) on a blind date and in 1936 they married. Initially, they lived in Hollywood and then moved to Burbank. Joyce enjoyed being a homemaker, raising their three daughters, Patricia, Susan and Cathy, in Burbank, California.

Extremely active in volunteer work, Joyce was PTA President several times, Brownie and Girl Scout Leader several times, helped at the election polls every year, was a leader with the PTA Coordination Council, helped to distribute Christmas baskets and on and on! She kept VERY busy helping others but was always available for her family.

Her hobbies were crossword puzzels, jigsaw puzzels, playing cards, reading, reading & reading! She loved mystery novels.

Joyce passed away on July 28, 1977, at 63 years of age, just one year after loosing her husband,

Joyce had many friends who loved her fun sense of humor and wit. She was and still is missed by her family and friends.

RIP ~ We love and miss you, Mom!
