W. Hayden Strickland left home at age 17 and joined the U.S. Calvary in San Antonio,Texas and served thre years. After he Married Blanche, he worked in the oil field for Pure Oil Company in Cove,Texas as a field worker in Galveston Bay. He moved from Cove to Mexia, to Van, Texas with the Pure Oil Company. The Strickland family moved to Van, Van Zandt County, Texas in 1942.
Hayden's life, after marriage to Blanche, was charaacterized by love of family. The Strickland home was a central meeting place for family and friends. He raised large gardens and owned or leased land for his gardens and livestock from marriage until his death. These wer familly events.
The Stricklands enjoyed all the high school sports events through their sons, Billy and Weldon. They went to all their games and then to the games in which their grandsons and great-grandsons from Van participated.
Hayden became a Baptist minister while he was still working in Cove, Texas and preached the Gospel of Christ in severral Small communities around Cove and Van, Texas.He continued preaching after being retired by Pure Oil when they were acquired by 76 Oil in 1960 until his death.
