George William (Bill) Bruce, 73, passed away at 2 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at his residence while under the care of Saint Anthony's Hospice, with his family by his side.

He was born Aug. 4, 1936, in Hillview, Ill., the son of Ernest and Hurble (Bradshaw) Bruce.

He was formerly married to Margaret R. Rhine Bruce and she survives in East Alton.

He retired as a tank foreman from Owens-Illinois Glass in Alton in 1983 after 33 years, at the time of the plant's closing. He was currently working for Mike Barton of Barton Properties. He was an active member of Alton Moose Lodge 951 for several years, holding office for the first time as treasurer in 1987. He was a member of the Moose Fellowship and Alton Eagles Aerie 254.

He is survived by his life partner of 22 years, Carmen Robertson of East Alton; a daughter, Brenda Bruce of East Alton; four sons, Mickey Bruce of Wood River, Douglas Bruce of East Alton, Jeffrey Bruce of Roxana and Chad and Amy Bruce of East Alton; Carmen's son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Cindy Robertson of Cottage Hills; between the blended families, there are 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Sandy Bruce of Festus, Mo.; a sister, Charlotte Watts of Battleground, Wash.; three sisters-in-law, Edmunda Bruce of Rosewood Heights, Ruth Bruce of Holiday Shores and Georgena Bruce of Alton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jean Farman; and three brothers, Herbert, Martin and Adrian.

Visitation, with Moose rites at 7 p.m., will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto, where services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19. The Rev. Charles West will officiate.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials may be given to St. Jude's Children's Research or Saint Anthony's Hospice.
