All information I have found indicates this Jno J Garner was in 9th KY CAV, so at this time I have chosen to not change the info
Suggestion from member #46547467: I believe this John J Garner is from the 9th TN Cavalry - not KY as the headstone notes. John J and 2 of his brothers, Samuel L and Nathan C joined the 9th TN in 1862. He was in Co. H and they were in Co E. This John J Garner was captured at Tazewell, TN on 1/24/1864 per the Prison records. That same day a Confederate Supply Convoy and General Vance. (NY Times Article) were captured at Tazewell. The 9th TN was in skirmish action in that area from their unit records. The 9th KY Cavalry was in the Union forces and was dismantled in 1863. There was no 9th Kentucky Cav. with the Confederacy in 1864. The POW record reads 9th Tenn with KY overwritten on it - or vice versa. John J Garner of Maury County, TN, my 2nd great Uncle, did not return from the War. Fold3 records list one John J Garner - a POW at Rock Island, who died of pleurisy. I believe this is his interment. His wife remarried in 1868.
