(Candidate: On the 1900 Chicago Ward 26, Cook Co., IL census, I found boarder and farm laborer, John "Steffen," age 22, born in May 1878 in Germany, his parents were also born in Germany. He boarded with a German family, John P Leuter. He immigrated in 1900.)
On the 1910 Chicago Ward 18, Cook Co., IL census, I found railroad machinist and roomer, Joseph Stephani, 40 (so born about 1870), born in Germany. He roomed with Dan M Smith, etc. and was residing on Desplaine Street. His parents were also born in Germany and he immigrated in 1886 and naturalized. If he immigrated in 1886, when he was age 12, he most likely came with family.
Multiple sons in the same family, could be given the first name "Johann," in Germany.
His Cook Co., IL Death record states Joseph Stephani, died on 16 May 1951 in Chicago, IL at 158 N Mason Avenue, aged 77 years, married, and was employed as a manufacturer. He was born in Germany on 20 May 1873 to Jos Stephani. The informant was Helen N Chapman (daughter of August & Helen Stephani Neff). He was buried at Rosehill in Chicago, by Drake and Son Funeral Home.
His shared plot was "owned by John Johann Stephani," per the cemetery records. The Neff marker includes the above "Joseph Stephani, 1874 - 1951" His sister, Helen S(tephani) Neff and her husband, August E Neff plus Helen's uncle "John Baptist Stephani".
The shared gravestone includes:
