OBITUARY

Mr. James Freeman, the son of the late Mr. Graham and Mrs. Jennie Freeman, took his last step on the King's Highway on January 27, 1993.

"Freeman" as he was known, was a soft spoken man with an easy smile and a great sense of humor. He was a true friend in every way and would do whatever was needed in his own quiet way.

Born in Craven County, N.C., he was educated in the public schools there, after which he joined the United States Army. He served his country in the European Theater of World War II and was honorably discharged. He returned to his home in North Carolina, and began his employment with Colonial Stores, Inc. in Durham, N.C., later transferring to the Norfolk, Va. location. There he met and married Mrs. Ruth Ellen Turner-Wright. He retired from Colonial Stores, Inc. after 37 years of service, but remained active in his community and other endeavors. In addition to being a member of First Baptist Church, Crestwood where he served on the Senior Male Usher Board, he was also a member of the Colonial Stores Retirement Club.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Ruth Ellen Freeman; two daughters, Barbara Ann Brown and Faye Yvonne Smith; two sons, Wilbur Abner and James Edward Wright; one sister, Stella Habbit; three brothers, William, Avant Freeman and Joseph Freeman; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one son-in-law and two daughters-in-law. He is also survived by a large number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A precious love from us has gone,
A voice we love is still.
In tears we saw you sinking
And watched you fade away.
Our hearts were almost broken,
We wanted you to stay,
But when we saw you sleeping
So peacefully and free from pain,
How could we wish you back
With us to suffer once again?
It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you did not go alone,
A part of us went with you
The day God wok you home.
The broken hearts you left behind
That loved you so sincere
Will always keep your memory and
The love for you so near.
