He deserted after being wounded at Fredericksburg and Chancellorville and joined the Quakers according to the records that I have found.

Co. I, 18th Regiment. Henry H. Burgess, a Yadkin resident entered at age 30 in Wake Co., on 9-10-1862, Present until he was wounded in the left thigh at Fredericksburg, VA 12-13-1862. Died in a Richmond, VA hospital on 2-24-1863 if "pyremia and hectic fever" (NCT VI, 403). Henry H. Burgess b. about 1840 and was in the household of William and Elizabeth Burgess (1850 Surry) He was the brother of William A. and Robert C. Burgess who also served in the same company/regiment.
