Robert graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 1858. He was a Greek tutor at the University from 1858 to 1861 per "Alumni History of the University of North Carolina (1795-1924)" edited by Daniel Lindsey Grant.

Married to Rebecca Bennehan Cameron on April 28, 1863 in Orange County, North Carolina.

Robert and Rebecca had a child which died in infancy.
