Mrs. Sophia Hinkeldey, daughter of Dick Honsbruch and his wife Elizabeth nee Schroeder, was born on Mar. 28, 1878 in Afton Twp., Cherokee County and departed this life at the home of her son, Albert Hinkeldey, Alta, May 9, 1964 at the age of 86 years, one month, and 11 days. The deceased was received into God's Kingdom of Grace in infancy through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Afton Twp. After due instruction in the fundamental doctrines of the Christian religion, she was received into communicant membership of Immanuel Lutheran Church through the rite of confirmation on the 22nd day of March, 1891, with Pastor Alfred Doerffler the officiating clergyman. The deceased married Herman Hinkeldey on April 21, 1901, Pastor Schwenk performing the ceremony. This union was blessed with five sons and two daughters. Following their marriage, they came to the Hanover community where she has been a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church the past 63 years. Though handicapped in many ways, she was a regular worshipper, supporting her church with the means and abilities which the Lord had provided, offering encouragement to the pastor, and being particularly interested in Bethesda Lutheran Home in Watertown, Wis., supplying this institution with many hand-made quilts. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1930 and one son, John. She leaves to mourn her departure four sons and 2 daughters; Albert and Herman of Alta, Edward of Aurelia, Mrs. Anna Nielsen of Rembrandt, Martin of Alta and Mrs. Frieda Mohn of Aurelia. One sister, Mrs. Mary Lebeck of Storm Lake, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Honsbruch of Afton, 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. Services were held May 11, 1964 at 2:00 p.m. from the St. John Lutheran Church, Hanover with Pastor R. M. Lammers officiating. Attendants were grandsons of the deceased: Arlin Hinkeldey, Dwaine Hinkeldey, Robert Hinkeldey, Roger Hinkeldey, Edward Nielsen, and Carroll Pingel.
