Dale Walter Stunkel was born on a farm east of Ansley (Custer County) Nebraska on February 5, 1938 to Walter Fredrick & Lucetta "Lucy" Ann Amelia (Bose) Stunkel. He grew up in Ansley and attended Ansley High School. After graduating he moved to Omaha (Douglas County) Nebraska where he lived for two years. Dale joined the United States Marine Corp on January 14, 1958, which took him to Japan and Okinawa. Dale was honorably discharged December 23, 1960.
Dale met Melba Darlene (Haddix) in 1957, through a mutual friend. Their first date was over whether the Ansley Christmas lights were still up. Darlene bet Dale that the lights had been taken down, so they drove to Ansley to check it out. Darlene won the bet and Dale took her to get a soda to make good on that bet. They were married May 21, 1961 in Ansley, Nebraska. Two children were born to this union. Dalene Linette in 1964 and Dwight Anthony in 1970.
Dale and Darlene moved to Lincoln (Lancaster County) Nebraska where they started their lives together in an apartment.
Dale worked construction putting in basements, sewer and water lines. He attended University Nebraska in Lincoln and became employed with the Lincoln Police Department from 1962 to 1980. He had part-time jobs here and there, including being a security guard for Havelock Bank and Holiday Inn Motel.
In 1962 they purchased their first home in the Havelock area of Lincoln, and lived there for 10 years. They then purchased an acreage and built a house 3 miles east of Lincoln. They moved in one week before Christmas in 1972.
In 1979, Dale and Darlene purchased an existing shoe repair business on 15th & South Street in Lincoln, and renamed it D's Shoe Hospital. Family owned for 10 years, until Dale had shoulder surgery. Between 1979 and 2008, Dale enjoyed purchasing businesses (referbishing them) and reselling them.
Dale and Darlene then moved to Kearney, to be closer to their elderly parents. At this time they purchased a saddle repair business and started shoe repair once again. They named this business Kearney Shoe Hospital & Saddle Repair. It was in operation until May 2010 when the business was purchased and renamed Circle D Boot and Saddle Repair.
Dale's hobbies included, collecting coins, Grand Children, hunting, and talking with customers.
Dale was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in late June 2009. He went through two Chemotherapy treatments at the Omaha Medical Center in late July for a month.
