Lieutenant-general, first in the French, then in the Prussian army.
In 1766 he married Wilhelmine Sophia Eleonora, Princess of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (1751-1780), in 1787 he concluded a morganatic marriage with Katharina Margaretha Kost (1757-1829). She was ennobled under the name of Ludwigsburg, in 1781 she became baroness of Ottweiler, in 1783 countess of Ottweiler and finally in 1789 duchess of Dilingen
