In 1775 he succeeded his father. In 1799 he inherited Saarbrucken, but when in 1801 the peace of Luneville was concluded he had to give up these lands, in exchange for territories on the right bank of the Rhine. Since 1770 (and until 1795) he was lieutenant general of the Dutch army
