Born at Hollenhof, Hanover, Germany. Hollenhof was south of Zeven, and is now extinct. Came to Cincinnati in 1836, married Rebecca Knoop 1839, and moved west to Benton County, Missouri with the Knoop family and Peter Ficken, who had married Rebecca's sister Gesche Knoop.

Moved to Warsaw Illinois about 1849, and established a mill. Later retired to a farm just east of Warsaw.
