Charles W. Simmons III, of Mineral Wells, went to be with the Lord on Nov. 22, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Service is 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, at Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Chapel on Wednesday, with burial at Woodland Park Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Funeral Home in Mineral Wells. Pallbearers are Jay Baum, Ryan Sudderth, Hubert Edenfield, Mike McAllester, Ira Mercer and Randy Ezell. Honorary pallbearers are the Walmart Coffee Drinkers, of which he was a proud member. Charles was born Dec. 1, 1930, in North Carolina, but was raised in Jacksonville, Fla. He served in the U.S. Air Force from July 13, 1951, until July 12, 1955, which brought him to Fort Wolters in Mineral Wells, where he met and married Johnowene "Johnnie" Oliver on June 26, 1955. She preceded him in death on Nov. 10, 1996. On Jan. 8, 2000, he married Wanda Beaty, who also preceded him in death on Jan. 29, 2003.

Charles was employed by Cantex, the U.S. Post Office, and Mineral Wells Pipe and Supply in Mineral Wells. Charles loved his family very much and was especially proud of his grandchildren, Brandi and Jay. Charles enjoyed working in his yard, watching sports, fishing at Port Aransas, and his dogs, Mandy and Sawyer. He will be dearly missed by his family.

Charles is survived by daughters, Teresa Baum, of Mineral Wells, and Sheila Sudderth and husband, Mike, of Lake Palo Pinto; two grandchildren, Brandi Lee, of Mineral Wells, and Jay Baum, of Mineral Wells; a brother, Allan Simmons and wife, Faye, of Florida; a sister, Barbara Edenfield, also of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Brian Richard Simmons, on Jan. 18, 1973.

Special thanks to PPGH Oncology Department, the Vitas Hospice field staff, and the Vitas Hospice Unit at Baylor All Saints for their exceptional and compassionate care.
