Born the son of Isaiah T. and Delilah (Hackenburg) Caldwell, came to Schoolcraft with divorced mother in 1874 and clerked in a dry goods store. He removed to Marcellus, where he owned his own grocery. Married Hannah Boyce in 1880 and moved to Battle Creek, where he built his own grocery downtown. Was struck and killed by a trolley car after exiting a plumbing store. Was a devout Methodist, Odd Fellow and Maccabee. His body was brought by train by the Odd Fellows for interment.
