Walter served as a a Private First Class in the 231st Company, 492nd Port Battalion, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Buffalo, Erie County, New York prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on February 17, 1943 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted as being employed in the foundry occupation and also as Single, without dependents.

Walter was killed in the "Line Of Duty" along with 193 Coast Guard crewmen and 55 other Army stevedores when the USS Serpens, anchored off Lunga Beach, Guadalcanal, exploded for an unknown cause while they hurriedly loaded depth charges (350 pound Torpex Depth Bombs, MK 54's), preparing for the Battle of Okinawa.
